Dreams and Merry-Go-Round by Langston Hughes

Dreams

Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.

Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.

Merry-Go-Round

COLORED CHILD AT CARNIVAL

Where is the Jim Crow section
On this merry-go-round,
Mister, cause I want to ride?
Down South where I come from
White and colored
Can't sit side by side.
Down South on the train
There's a Jim Crow car.
On the bus we're put in the back—
But there ain't no back
To a merry-go-round!
Where's the horse
For a kid that's black?

SCUU - Jazz and Poetry: A Tribute to Langston Hughes

This Sunday's service is titled "Jazz and Poetry: A Tribute to Langston Hughes" and will be led by members of the Sunday Service committee. Summary: "As a poet, Langston Hughes highlighted the poetic expression of jazz. His poetry trumpets jazz and reflects its rhythms. We'll enjoy some of our own jazz musicians and some of Hughes' poetry in this tribute."

The March WOW at Rev. Amy's House

Because the Pledge Drive Kick Off Dinner is tentatively scheduled for March 18th at the Mason Hall, and is a rather Big Soiree, we'll simplify the WOW.

The WOW will be an orientation gathering at Rev. Amy's house at 7:30pm on March 11th. We'll have hot drinks and desserts.

We'll include directions to the WOW in the soon to be sent Evite.

Everyone is invited to attend the Pledge Dinner and meet the whole the congregation.

A WOW Moment: This is one more battle in the long march for equal rights

Our Board Member Jean Carr's Quote During the Rally appears in the Paper!

"This is one more battle in the long march for equal rights. This much is clear to everyone here."

The Link to the Washington Post article: Same-Sex Marriage Ban Draws Protest

Thanks to all who were at the rally.

Former congressman and NAACP president Kweisi Mfume was also quoted: "I am steeped in the civil rights era. The law has to be extended so that everybody is protected."

The Snow was Beautiful Saturday Night for the WOW!

We had a wonderful time at Bob and Sara's house. The WOW finished before the snow started its heaviest fall. Service was called off for Sunday and I hope everyone got out to enjoy the snow.

Please remember to drive safely and walk safely. The laws of physics are in full effect.

A WOW Moment: SCUU Young Adult Speaks Out Against Homophobia in the Classroom

Today, Rachel Styles, as president of the North West High School Gay Straight Alliance, and three other student representatives met with the faculty during a faculty meeting, and spoke out against homophobia in the classroom and discussed constructive ways to help all kids feel safe in the classroom.

By most people's recollection this was the first meeting of its kind.

The faculty members were receptive and impressed.

The February WOW has landed at the Hull's House

Our plans were up in the air but now we have landed.

Like cats we are agile.

Sara and Bob will host on Saturday Feb 11th. Orientation will commence at 5:30pm and the dinner will follow at 6:30pm.

The WOW is on the second Saturday of the month.

We’ll have Orientation at the February WOW. At Orientation we will listen to you; tell you about UU in general and SCUU in particular, and share stories of our spiritual journeys.

Life is good; life is exciting and good.

We're Back! What Would Emerson Say?

The Sugarloaf Congregation of Unitarian Universalist (SCUU) Web site is back up! All the links to SCUU work now.

"Finish each day and be done with it.
You have done what you could;
some blunders and absurdities have crept in;
forget them as soon as you can.
Tomorrow is a new day;
you shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit
to be encumbered with your old nonsense."
Ralph Waldo Emerson

"Men succeed when they realize that their failures are the preparation for their victories."
Ralph Waldo Emerson

"Do not be too timid or squeamish about your actions. All life is an experiment."
Ralph Waldo Emerson

We Are Experiencing Technical Difficulties!

1. The SCUU web site is down. It will be back up within the next 48 hours. Until the site comes back up the SCUU site links won't work.

2. Due to a scheduling conflict the next WOW will not be at the Stamper's. The WOW now has the status of To Be Determined (TBD).

Aside from these developments everyone is having a great day.

We'll keep you posted.
