Congratulations to Michael Who Voted for the First Time Today!!!

Our "Little" Michael looking into the camera back in the day

His moms say he waited with them for 1.5 hours at the Germantown Community Center today to vote early. The lines were long.

Voting is as close as you get to a holy sacrament in our Unitarian Universalist faith.

"The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large"

News is that the polling sites will be closed tomorrow due to Sandy.  Bummer!! Early voting cancelled in Maryland on Monday due to approach of Hurricane Sandy

Megan's Musings: Before Day of the Dead

Diego Rivera , Fresco, Ministry of Education, Mexico City

This Sunday we’ll gather in our annual Day of the Dead service to remember those loved ones who have died. Sometimes it’s the case that our memories of those we love are tinged with regret.  Why didn’t we say that last thing to them, before it was too late? Why didn’t we clear up that last misunderstanding? Why didn’t we make the time to say I love you, before the person was gone?

Celebrating the Day of the Dead is not only a healthy way to pay honor and respect to our ancestors. It’s also a good time to remember that life for all of us is short, and even in the best of circumstances, lives come to an end. And, as we all know, sometimes circumstances are not at their best. So this day has a two-fold goal:  to remember our dead, yes. And, also, to connect with the living, while we still can.

If you have someone in your life whom you suspect may not be with you much longer, don’t wait to say the things you need to say to them.  Do it now.  And for those whom you assume will be around for many more years, may that be so. And be sure to say the things you need to say to them now, too. Remember how precious each of our lives is, in part because they are so short. Don’t waste a minute with the people you love.

I found a neat tool at www.mywonderfullife.com – a website where you can plan your own memorial service, leave letters for loved ones, share stories and upload photos, provide information on where important documents are, and so on. Maybe you’d like to use it yourself, or pass the information on to a family member. Maybe it can be a springboard for those important conversations you need to have.  If there’s something I can be helpful with, please feel free to get in touch.

We can’t plan to live forever, but we can plan to live and die without regrets. Have those conversations so your future Days of the Dead will be filled with peace and happy memories.

See you at Sugarloaf,
Megan

May Everyone Keep Safe!!

May Sandy go out over the ocean like a foul ball flies out of play; May the trees stay standing and not fall; May no one get hurt; May the feather sign not fly away; May the roofs over our heads not blow away or leak; May all dry things stay dry; May wet things stay in their appropriate places; May there be no need for candles or flashlights; May all the food remain in the refrigerators; May the energy and great web of life stay online; May we all be able to go to work, to go to school, and to play this weekend and week without concern; May insurance adjusters not have to be called; May all the emergency provisions not be needed; May the police, firefighters, nurses, EMT, tree trimmers, power repair people, and all necessary personnel be allowed to stay home in peace and quiet and watch the games; May you vote early...

Feather Flag: Light as a Feather

WOW You Might Be UU If You Vote For This Legislation

You Might Be UU If You Vote For This Legislation:

"Establishes that Maryland’s civil marriage laws allow gay and lesbian couples to obtain a civil marriage license, provided they are not otherwise prohibited from marrying; protects clergy from having to perform any particular marriage ceremony in violation of their religious beliefs; affirms that each religious faith has exclusive control over its own theological doctrine regarding who may marry within that faith; and provides that religious organizations and certain related entities are not required to provide goods, services, or benefits to an individual related to the celebration or promotion of marriage in violation of their religious beliefs."

A Free and Responsible Search for Truth and Meaning is For Everyone...  There's very few larger efforts towards a free and responsible search for truth and meaning than marriage.

WHERE DID THAT COME FROM?! WHERE DID THAT COME FROM?!

Seeker Roy added a post to his blog the name of the entry (and link) is What is Spirituality?

An excerpt: "I think that spiritual seekers almost universally seek a connection with something greater than the embodied self, with the light rather than merely the bulb.  We seek a connection that can free us from the prison of separate, individuated, personal existence. People seek and find that connection all the time in all kinds of ways, many having nothing to do with religion as it is conventionally understood.  I witnessed such a connection . . ."

He presented this at yesterdays Sunday Service with Carol...
